Humble us

"Actually josh you may be unaware, but overpopulation is a myth. I am all for big families. I think people nowadays are almost prejudice about it or think its weird."

Ok, I see what you're saying.I really do. Big families are great,I have a big family.
But here is what is happening in our society. Our culture is telling us yes keep having lots and lots of kids. Move to the suburbs, buy a car and a truck. Shop at big national
chain stores. Get the newest gadget every year. And we use so many resources it's crazy. Think about this: The average American household uses 300 gallons of water a day, the average American produces 5 pounds of trash each day, and each year the average American will use over 11,000 Kilowatts of electricity by themselves.
Now, I'm not saying that families are bad,not in the slightest. But it's really getting crazy, go take a stroll through the suburbs of Houston,or the DFW Metroplex. The Urban sprawl is stretching further and further.
I know we have enjoyed the luxury of having big families for centuries, but sometimes in order for a people to continue enjoying the things in life they love, eventually a generation is going to have to bite the bullet. And I think that as Christians we should know better than anyone about how important it is for us to be responsible.
We need to make sure that our faith isn't just the reflection of accepted cultural norms, even is they are the norms of good-conservative-republicans. Don't get me wrong, I like the GOP, I vote republican. But one thing we don't get right is the environment, or consumerism.
 I'm guilty too.
But help me understand how we as Christians can rationalize the by-products of our acceptance of these things:
  • How do you rationalize owning a 50" flat screen?
  • How do you rationalize living in 2000 Square ft home?
  • How do you rationalize not using the space in that house to help those without?
  • How do you rationalize continually spending money on a shirt made by someone who will never own a clean one?
We rationalize a lot. That's all I'm saying. It's so so easy to just go along with things because they are conservative ideas. But they are NOT(emphasized with sadness, not anger)  Christian ideas.
"For listen! Hear the cries of the field workers whom you have cheated of their pay. The wages you held back cry out against you. The cries of those who harvest your fields have reached the ears of the Lord of Heaven's Armies. You have spent your years in luxury, satisfying your every desire. You have fattened yourselves for the day of slaughter." James 5:4-5
I'm sorry, I can't accept that the consumerist mentality goes hand in hand with the Christian walk. It's a sin, and just like any other sin it's going to hurt in order to stop.
